UNFORTUNATELY THIS RESTAURANT IS NOT OPEN NOW, HAVE HEARD THEY ARE DOING CONSTRUCTION FOR A FEW MONTHS.

Looking for the best pizza in Chiang Mai? Well I think I have found it. I have been in and out of Thailand for a few years now and the one thing I always miss from my home country is a good quality pizza. I have tried many pizzas in Thailand but for the most part you get the exact same type of pizza. Usually, thin crust, not very exciting tomato sauce, minimal toppings and selection of those toppings. I often crave my pizza from back home.

Now I am based in Chiang Mai and I have once again looked and tried a few pizzas and though they are okay they were never fantastic until I visited Grandpa’s Pizza and Pasta Restaurant just last week. I stumbled upon a forum post and then found a link to the Facebook of this little restaurant. The pizzas looked delicious so I just had to go and find out for myself.

Now the place is not in the downtown area but inside the Nong Phueng, Saraphi District of Chiang Mai. If you are aware of the Maya Shopping mall we are talking about a 15 minute drive from there. You can find it on Google Maps and though it is a little tricky to get there it is well worth the visit. The drive is actually rather pleasant as along the way you have these fantastic giant trees that line with the road.

When you finally arrive at the restaurant it is rather small. In fact it is the owner’s house which has a few covered tables just in front. We were greeted by a pleasant hostess, offered a drink and then ordered our food. Of course there are other things offered on the menu besides pizza such as Pasta, hamburgers, Pork Belly, Chicken and even breakfast seems to be on the menu and you can order delivery or take out as well.

Pizza of course was on my mind and the options were fantastic. You have the option of Small, Medium or Large pizzas and the owner was kind enough to show us the pan sizes when we inquired about the size of the pizza. I ordered the medium pizza which was more than enough as did my friend. The pizza was a little more expensive than your typical pizza I found in town at about 350 Baht for the medium, usually can get the same size in town from 220 to 300.

However, you got the choice of up to 6 toppings on your pizza and they had a pretty nice list to choose from. It actually took me a couple minutes to work out a good 6 topping pizza that I thought would work well together. The restaurant had some cool toppings such as Salami, Ham, peppers both sweet and spicy, garlic, Olives both green and black, mussels, onions, chicken, tomatoes, garlic, blue cheese and a few more that escape my mind. They also had some extra sauces and spices you could sprinkle on your pizza after it arrived.

I ordered a Singha Beer for 90 baht with my pizza order and was surprised to see a big bottle of Singha placed in front of me instead of the little one I was expecting. My friend got a 3 topping pizza with olive oil, cheese, pineapple and onions. I myself got Salami, peppers, pineapple, garlic, chili, green olives.

After about 20 minutes our pizzas came out and wow they looked delicious and tasted even more delicious. I was blown away by how yummy this pizza was. The crust was perfect, beautiful melted cheese that stretched as you picked up a slice and lovely tomato sauce. Lots of toppings, flavor and mine was very spicy but I wanted it spicy and the restaurant did not disappoint. My friend was also quite impressed with the pizza and both of us had a hard time eating the whole thing but you are welcome to take any remaining pizza home with you.

The owner and cook is a very friendly Hungarian man who speaks good English and is more than happy to chat with you about anything. He and his staff was very welcoming and if you are looking for a fantastic pizza I would give Grandpa’s Pizza and Pasta Restaurant a go, it is well worth the drive. Don’t expect a beautiful high class restaurant here, but expect a friendly home restaurant with a nice staff and great pizza to enjoy. Will be back to this restaurant again!

Everyone is welcome at the restaurant and to learn more and see some of other dishes the cook has created visit the Grandpa’s Pizza and Pasta Restaurant Facebook page. The cook often takes photos of his creations and posts them online. At this time this pizza is the best pizza I have had in Chiang Mai and actually in all of Thailand and I have tried a lot of pizza!  Also take note that the restaurant is not open on Sundays.
